Ingrid Jespersens Plads

The broad gravel expanse above Trianglen metro station on Osterbro carries a name only since 2023: Ingrid Jespersens Plads, honouring the pioneer who founded a school for girls in 1894 - a school that still operates a stone's throw away on Nordre Frihavnsgade. The square sits between Faelledparken to the west, the Enigma museum building (the old postal headquarters) to the north, and the busy Trianglen junction with its little kiosk pavilion to the east. When the metro station opened in 2019 the surface was reinstated as the plain gravel field it had been before, and the space has stood largely empty since - windblown, as local press likes to put it. That is set to change: Copenhagen's city council approved a member proposal in January 2025 for a culture and market square here, and a two-year pilot project developed with the local culture district is intended to bring stalls, greenery, furniture and programmed activity to the site, with permanent redesign to follow if the experiment works. For visitors today the square functions mainly as the threshold to Faelledparken - Denmark's most-used park - and the natural meeting point before football at Parken stadium or events in the park. The Trianglen junction alongside is itself slated for calming, which would knit the square, the school and the park into one continuous public space. The name honours a genuine local pioneer. Ingrid Jespersen founded her private school for girls on Osterbro in 1894 at a time when serious academic education for women was still contested ground, and Ingrid Jespersens Gymnasieskole still teaches on Nordre Frihavnsgade today, making the square one of the few in Copenhagen named for a woman whose institution remains alive next door. The naming in 2023 was part of the city's broader effort to balance a street map long dominated by men.
