What do you call a self-managed village of 600 creatives on an old rail yard? Aarhus calls it Institut for (X) - a non-profit culture, business and education platform founded in 2009 by the interdisciplinary collective Bureau Detours on the Godsbanen freight-yard grounds, a short walk from the ARoS art museum. The model is radical self-management: members own their workshops, and together they run roughly 90 studios and workshops, 43 creative businesses, and a couple of dozen associations and schools spread over 10,000-plus square metres of sheds, pavilions and self-built structures around the old customs house. The public park between them belongs to everyone, and the programme ranges from concerts, club nights and jazz in the garden to festivals, markets and urban-design experiments. The institute has become a study object for bottom-up city development, negotiating with the municipality rather than against it - including a 10-year extension agreement and the mandate to push for creative free zones across Aarhus. "Bulldozer day" came in 2019, when the new Aarhus School of Architecture took 65 percent of the original territory; the community bargained parts of the ground into a formal public park and regrew into adjacent buildings as (X) version 2, with the X2 redevelopment run in partnership with the municipality and Realdania. The atmosphere survives intact: raw, hand-built, and busiest on summer evenings when the whole yard turns into an open-air living room. For a visitor the place works best unplanned: wander in from the Godsbanen side, past skate ramps, container workshops and self-built saunas, and follow whatever is open - a ceramics studio one door, a screen-printing shop the next, coffee from whichever counter is staffed. Summer weekends bring flea markets, open-air concerts and food events to the central yard, and the calendar on the institute's site lists what the member associations have made public.
