KLEIN is Sydhavnen's music venue - the only stage in the Copenhagen district with concerts running year-round - and an integrated part of Karens Minde Kulturhus at Wagnersvej 19. The name honours Vilhelm Klein, the architect who drew the big red 1880 building the venue lives in, the neighbourhood's own "castle" at the gate to the green south harbour. Two stages carry the programme. The indoor cafe stage, capacity 150, puts the audience close enough to read the setlists, with a foyer to retreat to and earplugs at the bar. The summer stage is the Dansepavillonen - a listed, 130-year-old wooden dance pavilion originally built for Sct. Hans Hospital, now standing in the Karens Minde green axis with benches around its walls, shutters that open to the park air, and, as the venue puts it, forgotten stories in the woodwork. Capacity there is likewise 150, and it hosts the neighbourhood's Copenhagen Jazz Festival concerts each July. The booking profile loves the wild-growing and experimental - jazz, indie, world and DIY projects - and the venue collaborates readily with music associations, clubs and bands. Access is level-free to both stages, and facilities can be hired for productions and events. Ten minutes from Vesterbro, the setting still feels like leaving the city. The venue's role in Sydhavnen goes beyond the concert calendar. As the district's only year-round stage it functions as the musical arm of the whole Karens Minde complex, feeding audiences into the cafe and park and giving local associations a professional frame for their own arrangements - a deliberate contrast to the volume-driven booking of the inner city's venues. Tickets stay affordable, the bar is run without pretension, and the walk from Sjaelor or Sydhavn station passes through the green axis that makes an evening here feel like a small excursion rather than a night out downtown.
