Litteraturhuset

Europe's largest house of literature stands behind the Royal Palace park in Oslo. Litteraturhuset opened on 5 October 2007 at Wergelandsveien 29, in the 1932 building architect Henry Fearnley Coll designed for the Oslo Teachers' College - a heritage-protected house since 2013, bought outright in 2017 by the free-speech foundation Fritt Ord, which had conceived and financed the whole project. The numbers tell the story of a national institution: nearly 1,700 events a year drawing around 125,000 audience members, and roughly a quarter of a million visitors through the doors annually. The ground floor holds a bookshop, a cafe and the main stage Wergeland; in total the 3,500-square-metre house runs eight stages and rooms for readings, debates, podcast recordings, writing courses, exhibitions and school visits. The attic is fitted with workplaces for authors, translators and other writers, plus a small flat for visiting international authors, and the building houses the offices of Norwegian PEN, Norsk Forfattersentrum and other literary organisations. The mandate is broader than books: the foundation-run house works to promote literature in the widest sense, protect freedom of expression and feed a knowledge-based public conversation, which is why the calendar mixes novelists with philosophers, politicians and scientists. The conversion by Askim and Lannto architects won the National Trust's culture-heritage prize in 2008 for giving an old building new content without sacrificing preservation. The location, at the corner of Parkveien beside Kunstnernes Hus and the palace park, puts it ten minutes from the National Theatre. The Oslo house proved the concept for a whole country: literature houses have since opened in Bergen, Fredrikstad and beyond, all patterned on the Wergelandsveien original, making Norway one of Europe's densest markets for the format.
