A 1920s French brasserie as New York imagined it, parked in an old customs house on Stockholm's harbour front. Mister French has run since 2013 in Tullhus 2 on Skeppsbrokajen, the quay below Gamla Stan, where the art-deco dining room and one of the city's most coveted terraces look straight out over the water toward the inlet of Stockholm harbour. The kitchen works charcoal grill, shellfish and French classics from an open kitchen, with the menu following the seasons - seafood towers and oysters lead the summer, grill evenings and the dinner club carry the winter, and the shellfish brunch has become a weekend institution. The central cocktail bar treats drinks as seriously as the kitchen treats the grill, and the room shifts through the day from business lunches to late-evening live acts and day parties on the terrace. The operation belongs to the French Group, whose portfolio has made polished, high-energy dining rooms something of a Stockholm signature. The setting adds the final argument: Tullhus 2 sits on the quayside walk between the Royal Palace and Slussen, five hundred metres from Gamla Stan metro, with the terrace facing the water traffic of the harbour. Conferences and private events run year-round - the julbord season is routinely ranked among the city's best - and hours stretch from lunch through late on weekends. Booking ahead is advised for evenings and any terrace ambition in high summer. The customs house it occupies is part of the Skeppsbron row that served Stockholm's harbour trade for centuries, and the restaurant's 2013 opening - in the space previously held by Pontus by the Sea - marked the quay's shift from working waterfront to leisure destination. On summer evenings the terrace functions as the front row for the harbour: ferries to Djurgarden and the archipelago pass close enough to read their names.
