Off Broadway

When Rupert and Helen came home from New York and could not buy a decent drink in Hackney, they built the bar themselves. Off Broadway opened on 6 December 2008 at 63-65 Broadway Market - the first new bar on the street in a decade - in a former art gallery the family had run since the 1980s, modelled on a lost Alphabet City hangout called Mickey's Blue Room. The Stars and Stripes still flies over the door. The pitch is an East Village neighbourhood bar transplanted whole: a formidable back-bar from which staff will build anything on request - your drink, served your way - with Old Fashioneds, Negronis, sours and daiquiris as the house bread and butter, American craft beers and a couple of keg lines alongside, and a concise, globally minded wine list. The food menu keeps the theme with grilled cheese, nachos, quesadillas and LA-style tacos. Kids and dogs are welcome by day, which tells you plenty about the temperament of the place. The 40-capacity basement - complete with its own bartender - hires out for private parties and runs music nights, film screenings and even a knitting circle in quieter hours. Hours run 15:00-23:00 early in the week and midday to 23:00 Friday through Sunday, which pairs perfectly with the Saturday food market outside: Broadway Market at full tilt, London Fields two minutes north, and the Regent's Canal at the street's southern end. The bar's timing was as good as its pedigree: Broadway Market's revival was gathering pace in 2008, and Off Broadway grew up with the street, from gallery-quarter curiosity to fixture of one of East London's definitive Saturdays. The family connection to the premises - a print and art business before the taps went in - shows in the room's unforced character, and the cocktail-first, attitude-free service model has aged better than most of the decade's bar concepts.
