Poolen

Copenhagen's warehouse-party era got a permanent address at the end of a road between a dry dock and a junkyard. Poolen opened in spring 2024 at Refshalevej 189 on Refshaleoen - the city's last industrial wasteland - in an old workshop of the B&W shipyard that later housed the venue Stagebox, renovated by the team behind Pumpehuset and Byhaven into a 2,500-capacity room dedicated to concerts, raves, parties and events. The pitch is deliberate nostalgia with professional execution: the DIY spirit of the abandoned-warehouse party, delivered with stellar sound and light, a permanent stage, an eight-by-four-and-a-half-metre LED screen, proper bars and cloakrooms, and an experienced crew. The name comes from the flooded dry dock - the pool - beside the building, and the setting delivers the full Refshaleoen register: rusting shipyard structures, Copenhill across the water, and the area's festival pedigree from Copenhell and Distortion O to the techno club Hangaren. Beyond club nights and Danish and international live bookings, the hall works as a black box for hire: darkened skylights turn it into a neutral shell for conferences, award and TV shows, fashion shows, fairs and corporate summer parties, with a 1,500-square-metre closed outdoor area - bars, cloakroom, lounge options - included and more shipyard ground rentable beyond it. Access is by bus 2A, harbour bus or bicycle along Refshalevej, with parking on the old yard; the venue anchors year-round what the island previously offered only in festival season. The timing gives the project its urgency: Refshaleoen's redevelopment clock is ticking, with the city closing in on the old shipyard ground year by year, and Poolen's founders frame the venue as an open invitation to adventure into the last industrial frontier before it disappears. Meanwhile the island around it has grown into a destination in its own right - Reffen's street-food market, La Banchina's harbour dips and the Copenhagen Contemporary art halls all share the peninsula, so a night at Poolen extends naturally into a full Refshaleoen day.
