Siriuspalatset

A secret society built one of Malmo's cleanest functionalist landmarks. Siriuspalatset, on the corner of Rundelsgatan and Kattsundsgatan a block from S:t Petri church, was drawn by architect Gosta Olson, begun in 1931 and completed in October 1932 - a strict early example of the functionalism then sweeping Sweden, its facade famously bare of ornament down to the austere original facade lamps that photographs of the 1930s single out as the building's most striking feature. The owner explains the name: the Sirius Order, a Swedish fraternal society founded at cafe Rosen in Ystad on 2 May 1906 by a newspaper editor, a Danish-born barber and a young clerk. The order's second lodge, Orion, opened in Malmo the same year, and when the organisation - by then grown national - acquired this newly built palace in 1932, Malmo became its permanent seat. The Grand Lodge, the Grand Master and the order's chancellery reside here still, managed through the order's own property company, serving a membership today of around 5,000 across 46 lodges from Trelleborg to Ludvika. The building's first decades read like a cross-section of interwar Malmo commerce: a fruit shop, a duplicating-machine company, the artist Fritz Karfve's studio and the Skane editorial office of a Stockholm daily all shared the address, with furniture workshops, photographers and an umbrella factory as neighbours along Rundelsgatan. For today's visitor the palace is an exterior experience - lodge rooms are members-only - but it makes a rewarding stop on any walk through the quarter between Stortorget and Caroli, where Malmo's 1930s ambitions still stand in disciplined concrete and render. The order itself keeps a deliberately old-fashioned rhythm - lodge meetings, degree work and charitable collections that have run without interruption through depression, war and every remodelling of the surrounding blocks - and the palace's survival in near-original state makes it a favourite of Malmo's architecture walks, standing where the medieval street net of Kattsundsgatan meets the shopping quarter around Hansacompagniet.
