Skaal

Forty-eight taps under one roof make Kultorvet's beer hall the biggest single pour in central Copenhagen. Skaal - the name is simply the Danish toast - fills a large first-floor room over the pedestrian square at Kultorvet 11, between Norreport station and the Round Tower, with capacity for over 300 guests across the main hall, quieter corners and a generous terrace that spills onto the square itself, run with heaters and blankets deep into the cold months. The tap wall is the engine: 48 rotating lines spanning lagers, IPAs, stouts, sours and whatever else the Danish and international craft scene is shipping, backed by more than 60 bottles and cans, plus wine, cocktails and coffee for the mixed company. The kitchen keeps pace with burgers, herring plates, smorrebrod, salads and snacks - proper beer-hall food rather than an afterthought - and knowledgeable bartenders steer newcomers through the board. Prices sit mid-range for the city centre, with communal tables and standing room around the long bar setting the sociable tone. Hours run long: from 11:30 daily, past midnight most of the week and to 03:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, which makes Skaal work as lunch stop, afternoon terrace, sports-screen hangout and late-night last call in one address. In summer the outdoor seating merges into Kultorvet's cafe life - one of the inner city's best people-watching perches - and the location puts Stroget, the Latin Quarter and Torvehallerne all within five minutes on foot. Kultorvet itself - the Coal Square, laid out after the fire of 1728 as the city's fuel market - adds the backdrop: buskers, chess players and market stalls fill the pedestrian space below the windows, the Copenhagen central library stands on the far corner, and the metro at Norreport is two minutes away. Screens go up for major football tournaments, boards of snacks bridge the kitchen's hours, and groups can book sections of the hall for parties without hiring the whole floor.
