A 1730s brewer's house beside the Round Tower is Copenhagen students' second living room. Studenterhuset at Kobmagergade 52, on the corner of Trinitatis Kirkeplads, occupies a building raised in 1729-31 after the great fire, owned for over a century by brewers whose brewery worked the courtyard, listed since 1945, and marked by a plaque recalling that the Studenterforeningen had its very first home in rented rooms here from 1820 to 1824 - professors, naval officers and future politicians fill the historic residents' list. The modern house was born of 1980s student activism - a sit-in demanding a students' house like those of England and France, which the University of Copenhagen answered by handing over the building. Today it runs as an independent non-profit association: every University of Copenhagen student is automatically a member (a KU card earns 25 percent off at the bar), students from other institutions can join, and more than 150 volunteers per semester staff the cafe, bar, bookings and community kitchen alongside a small paid team. The programme is the point: quiz nights, concerts, debates, language cafes, workshops and parties fill the week, the house organises the university's annual KU Festival, and side projects range from a volunteer bike workshop on Frederiksberg to the byStudents housing initiative each semester start. The formula has even exported - Boston's CultureHouse cites Studenterhuset as its direct inspiration. For visitors it is simply one of the inner city's cheapest, friendliest rooms for coffee or a beer, with the Round Tower literally across the square. The weekly grid barely changes with the semesters: Monday language exchange, the famous Wednesday international night that packs the bar with exchange students, Thursday quiz, live stages and open mics between - and because the house is member-driven, any student with an idea and a few volunteers can put a new event on the board. Coffee by day, cheap draft by night, and the building's crooked beams overhead either way.
