1720

A garment factory in the warehouse district now runs some of LA's heaviest bills. 1720, at 1720 East 16th Street just west of Santa Fe Avenue in downtown Los Angeles, opened in late 2017 when a trio of local rock musicians converted the old factory into a multi-purpose, all-ages venue. Designer Brant Ritter kept the raw industrial shell - high ceilings, exposed pipes, steel beams, painted concrete, a Nick Knudson triptych mural on the wall - and dropped best-in-class sound and lighting into it. The booking policy is the venue's signature: death metal and hardcore bills one night, raves and warehouse techno the next, punk reunions, hip-hop showcases and anniversary tours in between - a genre split few rooms in the city attempt, let alone under an all-ages policy with craft cocktails and beer for the of-age crowd and in-house catering for private events. Sound engineers who know their trade and security with a reputation for looking after the younger crowd round out the word of mouth. Practicalities matter down here: the block is industrial, street parking is scarce and the neighbourhood empties late, so rideshare to the door is the standard play - the venue's large loading doors make the drop-off easy to spot. Tickets run through Dice and Etix depending on the promoter. For a city full of polished mid-size rooms, 1720 keeps the warehouse-show ritual alive with professional plumbing behind it. The room's reputation travels on testimonials: one city blogger called it one of Los Angeles' most authentic underground venues, and the phrase gritty electronic paradise from its opening coverage still fits the mix of exposed brick and festival-grade rig. A full kitchen backs the private-event trade that fills the calendar between shows, from brand launches to video shoots, keeping the warehouse lit on nights the amps rest.
