A.D. Players at the George Theater

A Golden Globe-nominated actress built Houston a theatre company on faith. A.D. Players was founded in 1967 by Jeannette Clift George - the Houston-born Alley Theatre veteran whose film debut as Corrie ten Boom's companion in The Hiding Place earned a Golden Globe nomination - as a professional resident company producing what she called challenging, redemptive and joyful stories from a Christian worldview. After nearly four decades at the Grace Theater on West Alabama Street, the company opened its purpose-built home, the Jeannette and L.M. George Theater at 5420 Westheimer Road in the Galleria district, with To Kill a Mockingbird in February 2017. The George Theater is a 440-seat, 35,000-square-foot facility that George and her late husband planned for over a decade - she bought the land in 2003 and saw the project through after his death in 2004, though she herself passed away months after the opening. The mainstage season runs plays and musicals from world premieres to classic literature adaptations, and the building doubles as a venue for concerts and outside performance events between productions. The company's reach extends past the stage: an academy of camps and classes, touring educational performances into schools and churches, and an internship program run with Christian college partners keep the pipeline of actors and audiences renewing. Fifty-plus years on, A.D. Players remains what its founder made it - one of the country's longest-running professional faith-based theatre companies, now performing in a Galleria-district home worthy of the ambition. The Westheimer building was designed as a full production plant as much as an auditorium - scene and costume shops, rehearsal hall, classroom space and administrative offices under one roof - which lets the company build its seasons entirely in-house. The Galleria district address, unusual for a resident theatre, was deliberate: the company sought the widest possible audience rather than a theatre-district niche, and the location beside the city's busiest retail corridor delivers exactly that foot traffic.
