Two decades of Hollywood dance-floor history live at one address. Academy LA, at 6021 Hollywood Boulevard near Gower, is the latest and grandest identity of a building that has served Los Angeles dance music as Qtopia, Vanguard and Create - until Insomniac, the promoter behind Electric Daisy Carnival, partnered with Exchange LA to gut and rebuild it, relaunching in January 2018 with the production values of a festival main stage compressed into a club. The numbers explain the reputation: a Funktion-One sound system with F124 subwoofers, 55 moving lights, 145 customizable curved LED ceiling panels that have become the room's signature, CO2 cannons, a warehouse-sized main floor, an upstairs VIP loft and two patios - one indoor, one out. The outdoor patio incubated Insomniac's Day Trip brand of Sunday summer house-music day parties, and the 2022 DJ Mag poll ranked Academy the 36th best club in the world. Operations run Friday and Saturday nights from 10pm to 3am under a strict 21-plus door with an upscale dress code - no sportswear, no sandals - and the booking book leans headline EDM, house and techno with the occasional bass-music takeover. On-site lots handle parking for a cash fee, tickets move through the club's site with VIP tables booked by phone, and the sound stays famously contained: the engineers worked with the city to keep the Funktion-One's output inside the walls and off the neighbouring blocks. The building's club lineage matters to the scene: as Vanguard in the 2000s it hosted the first Los Angeles residencies of several superstar DJs, and Insomniac's takeover consciously positioned Academy as the year-round clubhouse for the audience its festivals assemble - EDC headliners routinely test new material here in rooms a fraction of festival scale. Hollywood Boulevard's east end supplies the after-hours economy, and the Red Line's Hollywood/Vine station sits within walking distance for those skipping the parking lots.
