Alberta Rose Theatre

A Spanish-Colonial picture palace anchors Portland's Alberta Arts District. The Alberta Rose Theatre at 3000 NE Alberta Street opened on 6 May 1926 as the Alameda Theatre - a 600-seat atmospheric cinema by architect Walter E. Kelley for the Seltzer siblings' local theatre chain, its auditorium styled as a Spanish-Colonial courtyard under a Mediterranean tile roof, with a ten-piece orchestra playing the opening night and a Wurlitzer organ installed from the Highway Theatre in 1928. The movie era ran through name changes - 30th Avenue Cinema, Cine 30 - until 1978, after which the building spent three decades as a succession of churches. In 2010 the owners raised 300,000 dollars to refurbish and reopen it as the Alberta Rose Theatre, a 300-seat live performance house that kept the courtyard serenity and the stucco walls while adding the sound and lighting of a modern listening room. The programming now spans music of every genre, comedy, circus and variety acts, live radio shows and independent film screenings - a mid-size seated room where, as the house puts it, every seat feels close to the stage. Good sight lines, strong acoustics, and proper food and drink service complete the formula, and the location in the heart of the Alberta Arts District wraps the evening in one of Portland's liveliest gallery-and-restaurant streets. The building's survival in near-original exterior condition makes it a favourite of the city's architecture walks as well as its listings pages. House regulars give the calendar its character: the live magazine-style shows, the touring songwriters who treat the room as Portland's listening-room stop, the annual runs of vaudeville and holiday variety productions, and the film festivals that return the auditorium to its original trade for a weekend at a time. Table seating up front and traditional rows behind keep the supper-club option open, and Alberta Street's Last Thursday art walks fold the theatre into the district's biggest monthly crowd.
