The Arizona Financial Theatre at 400 West Washington Street opened on 11 April 2002 as the Dodge Theatre - a roughly 43-million-dollar downtown project backed by investors including Suns and Diamondbacks owner Jerry Colangelo, designed by stadium architect Dan Meis of NBBJ to serve acts too big for the clubs and too intimate for the arenas. Opening week set the tone: sold-out runs from Harry Connick Jr. and Jerry Seinfeld, followed that December by the Radio City Rockettes' Arizona debut playing 38 shows to 100,000 people. The building's trick is scalability. Movable walls and flexible seating let the 5,000-capacity room shrink convincingly for smaller shows, and the striking modern shell conceals a straightforwardly efficient concert machine that passed two million total guests by 2009 and draws over 275,000 visitors a year. Live Nation has operated the venue since 2007, keeping the calendar dense with touring rock, pop, Latin and R&B headliners, stand-up specials taped for streaming, boxing and MMA cards, graduations and corporate events. The marquee has been a rotating sponsorship billboard - Dodge until 2010, Comerica Theatre through 2019, Arizona Federal Theatre until the credit union's 2022 rebrand made it Arizona Financial - but the room beneath has not changed role: downtown Phoenix's mid-size house, a block from the light rail and the convention center, filling the slot between the clubs of Roosevelt Row and the Footprint Center's arena bowl. Notable tapings and broadcasts have kept the room on screens as well as stages - comedy specials and award shows use the scalable floor to dress the house to camera - and the two-million-guest milestone reached within seven years of opening validated the original market bet emphatically. For Phoenix showgoers the venue's enduring advantage is the simplest: downtown address, light-rail stop, 5,000 seats and no bad ones.
