Nashville turned a demolished power plant into its downtown stage. Ascend Amphitheater at 301 1st Avenue South opened on 30 July 2015 with two sold-out Eric Church nights, the centrepiece of the new Metro Riverfront Park on the Cumberland River site where the city's old thermal transfer plant once stood - land that had idled for a decade after a minor-league ballpark scheme collapsed. The 6,800-capacity open-air bowl seats 2,300 in fixed rows with 4,500 more on the lawn, all facing a stage backed by the downtown skyline. The opening season set the venue's register - Chicago with Earth, Wind and Fire, Phish, Steely Dan, Widespread Panic - and the calendar has stayed dense ever since: roughly thirty headline events a year plus symphony nights and civic dates including July 4th and CMA Fest programming, wrapped inside a park of greenway trails, gardens, riverside swings and the city's first downtown dog park. Ascend Federal Credit Union's naming rights and Live Nation's decade of management defined the first era; after a hard-fought bidding war, hometown operator Opry Entertainment Group - keeper of the Ryman and the Grand Ole Opry - took over management in January 2026 with a ten-year, 41-million-dollar commitment. The location does the practical work: the honky-tonks of Lower Broadway are a ten-minute walk, downtown garages and rideshare zones absorb the crowds, and the river breeze earns the venue its local reputation as the best summer seat in the city. The name may change with sponsors; the skyline behind the stage is permanent. The design details reward attention: the lawn's grade was engineered so blankets at the back still get full sightlines, the roof canopy over the fixed seats reads as a sail from across the river, and the sound system was tuned to keep the downtown residential towers - some barely two blocks away - on speaking terms with the venue. Season-long lawn passes and the Nashville Symphony's outdoor series fill the gaps between tours, and the greenway connection means a fair share of the audience arrives by bicycle along the Cumberland.
