Ball Arena

Denver's big room opened with Celine Dion and has barely gone dark since. Ball Arena at 1000 Chopper Circle - the Pepsi Center until 2020 - opened on 1 October 1999 with a sold-out Dion concert dedicated to the Columbine community, the finish line of a 180-million-dollar, privately funded build by HOK Sport in the Central Platte Valley beside Speer Boulevard and I-25. The five-level, 675,000-square-foot arena is home to three franchises - the NBA's Denver Nuggets, NHL's Colorado Avalanche and NLL's Colorado Mammoth - seating 19,099 for basketball, 18,007 for hockey and lacrosse, and up to 20,000-21,000 for concerts and special events, with 89 luxury suites and 1,900 club seats in the premium inventory. Its banners tell a charmed recent history: the Avalanche's 2001 and 2022 Stanley Cups and the Nuggets' 2023 NBA championship were all raised here, and the concert ledger runs from Paul McCartney and Madonna to Taylor Swift across 250-plus events a year. Kroenke Sports and Entertainment owns and operates the building, and the 2020 naming deal with Ball Corporation came bundled with a sustainability program that moved concessions to recyclable aluminium. Practicalities are strong for a downtown arena: its own light-rail station on the west side of the complex, two I-25 exits, vast surface lots slated for a long-term mixed-use build-out, and Elitch Gardens amusement park next door filling the summer skyline with roller coasters. The arena's event mix runs deeper than its three tenants: NCAA tournament rounds, WWE and UFC dates, political conventions and the annual stock-show-season rodeo crossovers keep the dark nights rare, and the building's 1,000-strong event staff turn the floor from ice to hardwood to concert stage sometimes within the same weekend. The Grand Atrium's suspended sculpture of airborne athletes - 2,000 pounds, one and a half times life size - has greeted every visitor since opening night, a fixed point through two arena names and three championship banners.
