Blue Note Hawaii

The world's most famous jazz brand set up two blocks from Waikiki Beach. Blue Note Hawaii opened on 14 January 2016 inside the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort at 2335 Kalakaua Avenue, with Kenny G and ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro splitting the opening run - a pairing that announced the club's double mission of international headliners and Hawaii's own greats. The room took over the showroom where the Society of Seven had performed for four decades, transformed by a 3.5-million-dollar renovation into a sleek 326-seat supper club where every seat in the tiered semicircle has an unobstructed view of the stage. The 9,000-square-foot operation runs the full Blue Note formula: two shows nightly, seven nights a week, 365 days a year, with a full-service restaurant and bar working through the sets and a gift shop with a dedicated autograph corner for after-show signings. The first years set the standard - Chick Corea, Kamasi Washington, Roy Hargrove, Earl Klugh and Maxi Priest alongside island icons Henry Kapono, Willie K and Amy Hanaiali'i - and the booking has since widened into reggae, blues, pop and comedy, including surprise one-offs like Amy Schumer selling out on a day's notice. For Honolulu the club solved a real gap: a purpose-built listening room where local audiences and visitors share tables for world-class acts without flying to the mainland. Only a handful of Blue Note clubs exist worldwide, and the Waikiki edition wears the franchise lightly - blue-washed lights, ocean air at the door, and a nightly reminder that Hawaii's musical tradition holds its own on any bill. Executive chef-driven dining separates the room from mainland siblings - the menu leans island produce and seafood alongside supper-club standards - and the venue's private-event trade fills afternoons between soundchecks. Two-show nights mean an early seating that suits families and cruise schedules and a late set that belongs to the regulars; either way, the walk back down Kalakaua Avenue past the beach at midnight is an encore no other Blue Note can book.
