Brown Theatre at The Kentucky Center

The Grand Dame of Louisville has been raising her velvet curtain for a century. The W. L. Lyons Brown Theatre at 315 West Broadway opened on 5 October 1925 with Elsie Janis in the revue Puzzles of 1925, built by hotel magnate J. Graham Brown beside his adjacent Brown Hotel and modeled on New York's famous Music Box Theatre - an ornate Neo-Classical house by architect Preston J. Bradshaw with a fan-shaped auditorium, a lavish lobby and a 40-by-40-foot stage that Louisville boasted was the equal of anything in New York short of the Hippodrome. The equipment came from Macauley's Theatre, the city's legendary playhouse, which closed the same year and passed the torch across downtown. The Depression turned the Brown into a movie house in 1930, and for thirty years it ran films before a 1962 renovation returned it to live performance and touring Broadway. The Louisville Board of Education bought it in 1972 and renamed it the Macauley Theatre - closing the historical loop - before a 4.2-million-dollar restoration in 1998 revived the 1925 splendour, and the W. L. Lyons Brown family name went on the marquee. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and stands as Louisville's oldest operating theater, survivor of floods, fires and financial collapse. Today the roughly 1,400-seat house is one of three venues owned by Kentucky Performing Arts alongside the Kentucky Center two blocks away, hosting touring Broadway's mid-size productions, comedians, concerts, dance and the homegrown seasons of Louisville's performing companies - old-world plasterwork wrapped around modern technical systems. The Broadway address keeps the theatre at the centre of things: the Brown Hotel's lobby bar next door for pre-show manhattans, Fourth Street Live a block away, and a hundred years of Louisville evenings soaked into the walls.
