Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl

The stadium that once hosted Red Grange now seats a cozy 5,647 - and Butler likes it that way. The Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl opened in 1928 as the Butler Bowl, a horseshoe designed by Indianapolis architect Fermor S. Cannon and built into a ravine on the north side of Butler University's new Fairview campus at 4600 Sunset Avenue, alongside the same year's Jordan Hall and the fieldhouse that would become hallowed Hinkle. The Bulldogs christened it with a 55-0 rout of Franklin College on 12 October 1928, and the original 36,000-seat bowl - expandable on paper to 72,000 - hosted marquee visitors including Notre Dame in the Four Horsemen era and Red Grange's Illinois. Post-war reality shrank the ambitions gracefully. In 1955 the south stands gave way to the Hilton U. Brown Theatre, a grand open-air amphitheatre that served for decades as the summer home of Starlight Musicals, bringing Broadway-calibre productions to Indianapolis and cutting stadium capacity to 20,000. The 2006 campus redevelopment removed the theatre and the east stands for the Butler Apartment Village, whose balconies now overlook the field, and installed the artificial surface; a 2.6-million-dollar renovation in 2010 settled seating at 5,647 - bleachers and chairbacks along the west side, visitor seating opposite - with standing room pushing game days toward 7,500. Renamed for donors Bud and Jackie Sellick in 2017, the Bowl serves Butler's Pioneer Football League program and its men's and women's soccer teams, with the 1978-79 Indianapolis Daredevils of the American Soccer League a historical footnote. The setting carries the charm: wrought-iron fencing and brick throughout, Hinkle Fieldhouse's limestone bulk looming over the north end, and one of America's prettiest campuses wrapped around a stadium that traded scale for intimacy and came out ahead.
