The Moorish castle of Uptown has been Chicago's dream palace for a century. The Aragon Ballroom opened on 15 July 1926 at 1106 West Lawrence Avenue, built for 2 million dollars by brothers Andrew and William Karzas to surpass their own south-side Trianon as "the Wonder Ballroom of the World." Architects Huszagh and Hill wrapped the block in Spanish Baroque stucco while John Eberson - America's master of atmospheric movie palaces - designed the interior as the courtyard of a Moorish castle under a twinkling painted night sky, named for the Spanish region of Aragon after Andrew Karzas's European study tour. The golden age was staggering: 18,000 guests a week danced to the biggest names of the big band era, with WGN broadcasting an hour nightly from the ballroom floor to audiences across North America and reportedly into Britain. The Lawrence Avenue L stop next door fed the crowds in; the strict dress codes and no-jazz-too-hot policies kept the tone genteel. Decline followed the ballroom era - a stint as the Cheetah Club in the late 1960s, boxing matches, roller skating - before Spanish-language concerts and then rock shows rebuilt the calendar, and the "Brawlroom" nickname attached to its harder bookings. Live Nation acquired the hall in 2017 and the Byline Bank naming partnership arrived in 2019, but the room remains gloriously itself: 5,000 capacity general admission under the painted sky, chandeliers and castle balconies intact, with 20,000 square feet of floor convertible to banquets and galas seating up to 1,868. Rock, Latin, electronic and hip-hop tours treat it as Chicago's essential mid-size stop despite acoustics debated by every generation of concertgoer. Nearly a hundred years on, the Aragon and the Riviera and Green Mill nearby make Uptown a living museum of jazz-age nightlife - except the museum still sells out on Saturdays.
