A corner tavern that once hosted anarchist book clubs became Milwaukee's CBGB. The building at 2496 South Wentworth Avenue in Bay View has operated as a bar since its construction in 1910, and its upstairs room hosted an Italian anarchist circle in 1914 and live music as early as the mid-1910s. The Cactus Club name and country-western theme arrived in 1957 under Alice and Cliff Rose, whose family ran the place for four decades - Barbara and Bobby Rose taking over in 1989 - before bartender Eric Uecke bought it in 1996 and pointed the little stage at the future. Under Uecke the Cactus Club became the essential Milwaukee indie room, hosting more local artists than any other venue in the city and catching seminal bands on their way up: the White Stripes, Queens of the Stone Age and Death Cab for Cutie all played the tiny stage - originally just eight inches off the floor - before they were famous. A hard-won 2007 renovation lifted capacity from 80 to 200 over neighbourhood objections, and sound engineer Alex Hall's top-notch mixing became part of the club's reputation. Kelsey Kaufmann, a longtime staffer who took the reins in 2016 and bought the club outright in 2020, recast the operation as an artist-run, queer-owned, multidisciplinary arts space with a mission of sweeping inclusivity. Shows ballooned to 200 a year, and Kaufmann led the successful campaign to change Milwaukee law so small venues could host all-ages shows without locking up their liquor - a structural win for the whole city's scene. Partnerships like the ongoing exchange with Chicago's Sleeping Village wired the club into a regional independent network. The room remains what it has always been physically - a 200-capacity corner bar at Wentworth and Russell in one of Milwaukee's liveliest neighbourhoods - but its century of continuous operation, from anarchists to honky-tonk to hardcore, has made the address a bucket-list stop for anyone tracing where American underground music actually lives.
