Celebrity Theatre - Phoenix

Phoenix's theatre-in-the-round has been slowly spinning audiences around its stage for six decades. The Celebrity Theatre at 440 North 32nd Street opened on 13 January 1964 with the musical South Pacific starring Betsy Palmer, built as the Phoenix Star Theatre - a convention and cultural centre commissioned by hotel magnate Del Webb for his flagship Hiway House complex. Beverly Hills architect Perry Neuschatz designed the twenty-sided prestressed-concrete drum, 196 feet in diameter, winning the Prestressed Concrete Institute's top 1964 award; T. Y. Lin International engineered the structure. The room's geometry is its magic: 2,650 seats wrap a completely round 30-foot stage, and none of them sits more than 70 feet from the performers. The entire stage rotates through a full revolution - for the first six years by hand, until an electric motor arrived in 1969 at, legend has it, Liberace's urging - so every seat sees every angle over a two-hour show. An orchestra pit and a convertible proscenium configuration add flexibility, at the cost of a quarter to half the seats when used. The bookings across six decades track American entertainment itself: the theatre has hosted everyone from Frank Sinatra-era headliners through classic soul, country, comedy and rock, and George Carlin filmed an early HBO stand-up special in the round. Renamed the Travelodge Center in 1968 and Celebrity Theatre in 1972, the venue was listed on the Phoenix Historic Property Register in 2013 and the National Register of Historic Places in 2019. A 2021 renovation rebuilt the plumbing and restrooms and reimagined the lower level as the Encore Lounge, with its own bar and a secondary stage for smaller acts. Under owner Heidi Hazelwood's Celebrity Theatre LLC, the room remains one of the country's few working rotating-stage theatres - an atomic-age Phoenix original where the intimacy is architectural, not aspirational, and the stage literally comes around to your side of the house.
