Cervantes' Masterpiece

The Harlem of the West still has a working stage, and it has been booked solid since 2003. Cervantes' Masterpiece Ballroom at 2637 Welton Street occupies the old Casino Cabaret in Denver's Five Points neighbourhood, a room whose history reaches back to the mid-1920s and whose golden age paralleled the Cotton Club: through the 1930s, 40s and 50s, when segregation made Five Points the thriving heart of Denver's African American community, the Casino was a West Coast jazz epicentre where Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Benny Goodman played on tour, followed across the decades by James Brown, B.B. King, Ray Charles and Ike and Tina Turner. The modern chapter began when 26-year-old Scott Morrill and co-founder Jay Bianchi took over the space - then trading as Club Pure - installed a sound system, laid a Grateful Dead Steal Your Face carpet on the stage, and opened Cervantes' on 16 January 2003 with a Dead tribute band. The venue's defining feature followed: two rooms, the Ballroom and the adjoining Other Side, running shows simultaneously and connected so patrons drift between stages all night - a dual-venue format no other Denver room offers. Twenty-plus years of programming have made the corner a national touchstone for jam, funk, bluegrass, hip-hop, dubstep and electronic music: intimate performances by Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Dr. John, Pretty Lights, Nas, Big Boi, STS9, Sam Bush, Page McConnell and Branford Marsalis pepper a calendar thick with rising acts and late-night festival afterparties. The wraparound balcony and top-tier sound keep the Ballroom feeling close at every capacity. Renovations have negotiated the building's heritage carefully - the demolition of the Casino Cabaret's famous glass doorway drew community pushback until the iconic entrance was restored in partnership with Denver Landmark Preservation - and the venue now anchors the Five Points Historic Cultural District's musical revival, a block from the Welton Street light rail on jazz's most storied Denver street.
