Baltimore's 1962 Civic Center got a 250-million-dollar rebirth and instantly rejoined the A-list. CFG Bank Arena at 201 West Baltimore Street opened on 23 October 1962 as the Baltimore Civic Center, designed by AG Odell Jr. and Associates on the site of Old Congress Hall, where the Continental Congress met in 1776. The building carried six decades of city history: the NBA's Baltimore Bullets from 1963 to 1973, the Beatles in 1964, championship boxing, and successive identities as Baltimore Arena, 1st Mariner Arena and Royal Farms Arena as it aged into the country's most under-loved major-market room. The transformation was privately funded and brutally fast. Oak View Group won the city's modernisation RFP in February 2021, began construction in February 2022, and delivered substantial completion within about a year - "we did in 35 years' worth in 18 months for free-99 for the taxpayers," as Mayor Brandon Scott put it - with partners including Fundamental Advisors and Thirty Five Ventures, the firm co-founded by Maryland-born NBA star Kevin Durant, plus Pharrell Williams. The 250-million-dollar rebuild recast the 400,000-square-foot building around live music: all-new seating, 38 suites and club levels, reimagined concourses and concessions, comprehensive acoustic treatment across every hard surface, and a redesigned exterior. Reopened in February 2023 with the CIAA basketball tournaments and christened for concerts by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band that April - the Eagles and Earth, Wind and Fire close behind - the roughly 14,000-capacity arena booked about 120 acts in its first year, projected to draw a million patrons downtown. The record crowd of 14,686 for the Gervonta Davis fight in 2019 shows what the pre-renovation building could do; the new one does it in comfort. Two blocks from Camden Yards and the Inner Harbor with the Metro at its door, the arena anchors the west side's renewal - proof that Baltimore was always an A market waiting for an A building.
