Chan Shun Concert Hall

The main hall of UBC's Chan Centre was designed like a musical instrument, and performers treat it as one. The Chan Shun Concert Hall is the flagship venue of the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at 6265 Crescent Road on the University of British Columbia campus in Vancouver, opened on 11 May 1997 and named for Chan Shun, the Hong Kong shirt-manufacturing magnate and philanthropist whose sons Tom and Caleb Chan funded the building in his honour. Architect Bing Thom shaped the room in collaboration with ARTEC Consultants of New York, the acousticians behind several of the world's great modern halls. The design vocabulary comes from the cello: undulating curved walls, warm maple surfaces, and steel cables suspended overhead. The shoebox-shaped room seats 1,185 across three levels, with a 180-seat choral loft that lifts capacity to about 1,365 when configured, and stages up to 90 musicians. The tuning machinery is the hall's signature - a 22.7-tonne chandelier-like acoustic canopy that raises and lowers to change the room's reverberation, motorised sound-absorbent fabric banners hidden in the walls, and an orchestra pit on a mechanical lift - letting engineers reshape the acoustics from a solo recital's intimacy to full symphonic bloom. Reviewers marvelled from opening week at how the quietest playing carried with rich, full-toned presence. The residency history reflects the room's standing: the CBC Radio Orchestra moved its signature Avison Series into the hall in its first years and stayed a decade until the orchestra's 2008 disbanding, making the room a frequent CBC recording venue; the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Recital Society and Early Music Vancouver program it regularly; and the Chan Centre's presented season has brought everyone from the Duke Ellington Orchestra to global jazz and world-music headliners to its stage, alongside UBC School of Music ensembles and graduations. Two grand pianos - a nine-foot Steinway and a Yamaha - live in the building, and the hall's combination of technical adaptability and natural warmth keeps it in constant demand for performance, conference keynotes and film and television recording.
