Charlotte Convention Center

The largest public building project in North Carolina history opened in 1995 and has been growing into its city ever since. The Charlotte Convention Center at 501 South College Street in Uptown Charlotte opened on 1 February 1995, a 148-million-dollar facility by convention-hall specialists Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback and Associates that ranked among the nation's twenty largest by exhibit space on day one. The LYNX Blue Line light rail runs straight through the middle of the building - a rare piece of transit theatre - and the NASCAR Hall of Fame connects directly, sharing a ballroom. The core plant is substantial: 280,000 square feet of contiguous exhibit space divisible into four halls; the 40,000-square-foot Crown Ballroom holding 2,400 to 4,200; the 35,000-square-foot Richardson Ballroom, divisible into four 7,700-square-foot breakouts; and dozens of meeting rooms wrapped in generous pre-function space. More than half a million visitors pass through annually, feeding the 200-plus restaurants and 5,600 hotel rooms of the country's most compact walkable uptown. The 126.9-million-dollar expansion completed in October 2021 answered years of planner feedback: a new interior wing added roughly 50,000 square feet of meeting and pre-function space, lifting total leasable space to 600,000 square feet and breakout counts from 41 to 55 rooms, including two 10,000-square-foot flex spaces each divisible into nineteen configurations. The signature addition is the over-street pedestrian walkway linking the centre directly to the 700-room Westin Charlotte - the city's largest hotel - a Whole Foods and the LYNX Brooklyn Village station. The College Street location puts delegates two blocks from the Spectrum Center arena, Bank of America Stadium and the uptown arts campus - the physical hub of Charlotte's bid to compete in the nearly 300-billion-dollar meetings industry, and the building most out-of-towners see first.
