Phoenix solved the problem of 110-degree baseball with nine million pounds of moving steel. Chase Field at 401 East Jefferson Street in downtown Phoenix opened on 31 March 1998 as Bank One Ballpark - "the BOB" to a generation of fans - the 354-million-dollar home of the expansion Arizona Diamondbacks, designed by Ellerbe Becket after ground broke on 16 November 1995. It was the first stadium in the United States built with a retractable roof over natural grass: the 517-foot-span lid opens or closes in four and a half minutes on two 200-horsepower motors, drawbridge-style, through four miles of cable - to its own commissioned theme music, timed to the exact duration of the move. Renamed Chase Field in September 2005 after the Bank One-JPMorgan Chase merger, the park seats about 48,330 today. The building's eccentricities became beloved: the right-centre-field swimming pool - the majors' first - where a home run splash is a Phoenix rite; the airport-hangar profile rising 255 feet; and the air conditioning that chills the bowl to 78 degrees while the desert bakes outside. The grass experiment ended in 2019, when a purpose-engineered artificial surface replaced it, letting the roof stay closed through summer without sacrificing the field. The history peaked early and memorably: the Diamondbacks won the 2001 World Series here in one of the sport's great finishes, Luis Gonzalez blooping the Game 7 winner off Mariano Rivera, and the park has since hosted the 2011 All-Star Game, college football bowls, international soccer and monster truck shows. The concert record belongs to Pink, whose October 2023 Summer Carnival drew 53,400 - larger than any baseball crowd in the building's history. The Jefferson Street address anchors downtown's Legends District beside the Footprint Center arena, with light rail a block away - the climate-controlled town square of the hottest major city in America.
