The first stadium ever built for a women's professional team stands on the Kansas City riverfront, and it has not had an empty seat since. CPKC Stadium at 1460 East Front Street on the Berkley Riverfront opened on 16 March 2024 with the Kansas City Current beating the Portland Thorns 5-4 before a sellout - Vanessa DiBernardo scoring the building's first goal. Current co-owners Angie Long, Chris Long and Brittany Mahomes had announced the privately funded project in October 2021, barely ten months into owning the club; ground broke in October 2022, and the 117-million-dollar build by Generator Studio and JE Dunn delivered the world's first purpose-built home for a professional women's side, named for railroad Canadian Pacific Kansas City. The design priority was proximity and noise: 11,500 seats on seven acres with no seat more than 100 feet from the pitch, a safe-standing supporter end that amplifies the loudest section, pitch-side seats, a bunker club, luxury suites and local Kansas City restaurants on the concourses, over a heated-and-cooled playing surface. Small touches carry the mission - players touch a mural quoting Title IX before taking the field. The Current promptly became the first NWSL club to sell out every home match, with suites gone and a season-ticket waiting list. The stadium ignited a district: the surrounding Current Landing development has drawn hundreds of millions toward a billion-dollar riverfront commitment - apartments, restaurants, a town square - with a KC Streetcar stop a five-minute walk away since 2025. Expansion plans unveiled in June 2026 would grow capacity to 18,000, adding a parking garage and pedestrian bridge as demand keeps outrunning the building. Beyond Current matches the stadium hosts other soccer, rugby and lacrosse, concerts, markets and cultural events - but its significance is the precedent: proof that a women's club could build, fill and outgrow a stadium of its own, watched and copied across world sport.
