Kansas City is reclaiming its riverfront, and the district doing it grew out of a soccer stadium. Current Landing at 1460 East Front Street is the mixed-use waterfront neighbourhood rising around CPKC Stadium on the Berkley Riverfront, where the Missouri and Kansas Rivers' confluence once made the levee the city's original crossroads of trade. The Kansas City Current's owners - Angie and Chris Long with Brittany Mahomes - paired the world's first purpose-built women's professional stadium, opened in March 2024, with a development plan whose first phase opened in spring 2026, backed by more than 350 million dollars toward a billion-dollar private commitment. The launch phase delivered the bones of a working neighbourhood: the River's Edge and Confluence residential buildings with waterfront apartments, more than a dozen restaurants and bars, ground-level retail activating the upgraded Heritage Riverfront Trail promenade, and a Town Square of more than two acres programmed with live music, sports watch parties, markets and community events. KC Current Way, the curbless pedestrian-first street to the stadium, converts into a ceremonial march to the match on game days. A KC Streetcar stop five minutes' walk away links the district to downtown, itself about nine minutes by car. The events calendar leans on the anchor: NWSL match days at the sold-out stadium, international soccer watch parties through World Cup summers - Kansas City is a 2026 FIFA World Cup host city - open-air concerts against the skyline, and festival programming in the square and Waterfront Park's green spaces along the river. Future phases are drawn to add hundreds more residences, large-scale office space, a luxury hotel and an indoor concert venue, folding sport, music, living and riverfront recreation into a single district - the city's founding geography, put back to work as its newest gathering place.
