The Bank has been Baltimore's Sunday cathedral since 1998, and it is mid-transformation into a year-round one. M&T Bank Stadium at 1101 Russell Street opened on 8 August 1998 as the home of the Baltimore Ravens, a 220-million-dollar HOK design completed in under two years beside Oriole Park at Camden Yards - the football half of the Camden Yards Sports Complex, funded through tax-exempt bonds, lottery-backed debt service and team money. Known first as Ravens Stadium and then PSINet Stadium through the dot-com bust, it took M&T Bank's name in 2003. The 70,745-capacity building - 1.6 million square feet, nearly double its baseball neighbour - carries 142 suites and more than 8,300 club seats, with purple seat sections and gargoyle-free Baltimore brick drawn from the city's architectural stock. Two Super Bowl-winning Ravens teams built the aura, and the stadium's fan-experience investments have run continuously: a 35-million-dollar video-and-concourse round in 2013-14, stadium-wide Wi-Fi in 2015, and a LEED Gold certification in 2013 that made it the first existing outdoor pro sports facility in the country to earn the rating. Beyond the NFL, the building works a heavyweight event calendar: U2's 360 Tour set the record with 74,557 in 2011, Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Billy Joel and Metallica have headlined, the HFStival punk-and-alternative festival filled it twice, and NCAA lacrosse championships, CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals, Army-Navy games and Premier League friendlies rotate through. The current chapter is the biggest: a 430-million-dollar, 2024-2026 renovation - drawn from 600 million in state funds tied to a lease running through at least 2037 - is rebuilding the north and south plazas with a three-level open-air tailgate and concert venue, a year-round retail and hospitality Gatehouse, and expanded concourses, converting the stadium from eight game days a year into a permanent entertainment district two blocks from the Inner Harbor.
