The stadium that brought the NFL to Nashville is playing out its final seasons with its replacement rising next door. Nissan Stadium at 1 Titans Way, on the east bank of the Cumberland River directly across from Lower Broadway, opened on 27 August 1999 as Adelphia Coliseum, the 290-million-dollar home built to lure the Houston Oilers - reborn as the Tennessee Titans - whose first regular-season game there was a 36-35 thriller over Cincinnati on 12 September 1999, launching a 13-0 home start and a Super Bowl run that ended one yard short. The names cycled with the sponsors: The Coliseum, LP Field from 2006, and Nissan Stadium since 2015. The 69,143-seat open-air bowl has been triple-booked for most of its life: Titans football, Tennessee State University's Tigers - giving an HBCU program an NFL home field - and the Music City Bowl every December, plus Nashville SC's first two MLS seasons in 2020-21. Its concert history matches its market: the CMA Fest's nightly stadium shows have filled it every June for two decades, and stadium tours from the Rolling Stones to Taylor Swift's record-setting Eras nights, Beyonce, Ed Sheeran and Morgan Wallen have made it one of country music's biggest stages, with international soccer and Wrestlemania-scale events in between. The endgame was set in 2022-23, when studies put the cost of keeping the aging concrete structure first-class near 2 billion dollars and the city chose replacement: the new enclosed Nissan Stadium - 60,000 seats, 2.1 billion dollars, including the largest public stadium subsidy in US history - broke ground on 29 February 2024 on the adjacent lot, is targeted for February 2027, and will host Super Bowl LXIV in 2030. The original stadium is scheduled for demolition beginning March 2027. Until then the old bowl keeps its perch: the pedestrian bridge from Broadway delivering honky-tonk crowds straight to the gates, the skyline over the river doing the scenography - the front porch of the loudest downtown in American sport.
