Every retro ballpark in America is descended from the one on Camden Street. Oriole Park at Camden Yards at 333 West Camden Street opened on 6 April 1992 - Rick Sutcliffe pitching a shutout before 44,568 - as the home of the Baltimore Orioles and the first of the "retro" ballparks that rewired stadium design for three decades. Built for 205 million dollars by HOK (now Populous) and the Maryland Stadium Authority after a June 1989 groundbreaking, the park replaced Memorial Stadium with something radical for its time: a downtown, baseball-only, brick-and-steel park that embraced its city instead of walling it out, blocks from the Inner Harbor on rail yards where Babe Ruth's father once kept a saloon. The masterstroke was what the builders did not demolish: the 1898 B&O Warehouse, 1,016 feet of eight-story brick beyond right field - the longest building on the East Coast - was restored into offices and the park's defining backdrop, with Eutaw Street between wall and warehouse becoming a public promenade where bronze baseballs mark where home runs have landed. Only Ken Griffey Jr. has hit the warehouse on the fly, in the 1993 Home Run Derby. The design vocabulary - asymmetric dimensions, exposed steel trusses, 556,000 red bricks, downtown skyline - was copied in some form by nearly every ballpark built since. The building's memory bank includes Cal Ripken Jr. breaking Lou Gehrig's consecutive-games record in September 1995 - still the park's most famous night - the 1993 All-Star Game, playoff Octobers and the record 49,828 crowd of July 2005. Capacity has been trimmed from the original 48,876 to 42,455 by premium-space conversions, and the famously deep left field was rebuilt twice in the 2020s in search of fairer dimensions. With MARC and light rail at Camden Station and M&T Bank Stadium next door, the park remains the anchor of the sports complex it invented - thirty-plus seasons on, still the ballpark others get measured against.
