The Kansas City Chiefs once practised on this ground; now it grows soccer players instead. Swope Soccer Village at 6310 Lewis Road, inside Kansas City's vast Swope Park - one of the largest municipal parks in the country - was first dedicated on 13 July 2007 as the training home of the Kansas City Wizards, on the land that had served as the Chiefs' practice field before Arrowhead Stadium opened in 1972. The complex is a public-private partnership between the city's parks department and Sporting Club, the parent of Sporting Kansas City, and it grew in phases: a lighted all-weather turf field in 2008, then a 13.4-million-dollar city-bond expansion approved in 2013 that transformed the site into today's nine-field campus. The layout mixes elite and everyday: a natural-grass stadium field - Children's Mercy Victory Field, opened in November 2013 in time to host the Big 12 women's soccer championship - two natural-grass practice fields reserved for Sporting Kansas City's professionals, and six full-sized synthetic fields that serve the region's enormous youth soccer ecosystem, more than 16,000 boys and girls from over a thousand teams in a typical season. Bleacher configurations have pushed stadium crowds past 3,500, and the plaza's stainless-steel Triple Blome sculptures by local artist Jake Balcom mark the 2014 completion of the expansion. The guest list testifies to the surfaces: the US Men's and Women's National Teams, Manchester United, Manchester City, AS Roma, Club America, Chivas Guadalajara, Newcastle United and Stoke City have all trained at Swope, while the Children's Mercy Training Center hosts Sporting Kansas City II and all six of the club's academy teams. The championship calendar has included the Big 12 women's tournament from 2013 to 2019, NCAA Division II and III national championships, Missouri high school girls' state finals and NWSL matches for FC Kansas City. Managed today by Sporting Fields + Athletics, the twenty-plus-million-dollar village remains the quiet engine of Kansas City soccer - the place where the metro's World Cup-hosting, stadium-building soccer boom actually trains.
