The oldest continuously held major sporting event in America runs beneath two spires designed by a 24-year-old draftsman as an afterthought. Churchill Downs at 700 Central Avenue in Louisville opened on 17 May 1875, when Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr. - grandson of the explorer William Clark - staged the first Kentucky Derby before 10,000 spectators, won by the chestnut colt Aristides with Black trainer Ansel Williamson and Black jockey Oliver Lewis. Clark had toured Epsom and Longchamp in 1872 and modelled his three signature races on England's classics; the track rose on 80 acres leased from his uncles John and Henry Churchill, whose name it formally took in 1883. The Twin Spires arrived with the 1895 grandstand, when young Joseph Baldez of Louisville architects D.X. Murphy added two octagonal towers purely for visual effect - the ornamental flourish became the symbol of the track, the Derby and Kentucky itself. Around them grew the largest racing grandstand in North America: the 2001-05 clubhouse rebuild added 79 suites for 121 million dollars, permanent lights arrived for night racing in 2010, The Big Board - one of the world's largest 4K screens - followed, the 7,000-capacity First Turn Club opened for the 2023 Derby, a 200-million-dollar paddock debuted for the 150th running in 2024, and a 920-million-dollar expansion program runs toward 2028. Reserved capacity sits near 60,000, but Derby Day with the infield open pushes crowds past 150,000 - the record tops 170,000. The first Saturday in May is the institution: the Run for the Roses has been held every year since 1875, through wars and pandemic postponement, as the first leg of the Triple Crown, preceded by the Kentucky Oaks for fillies on Friday - itself among the nation's best-attended race days. The Breeders' Cup World Championships have visited nine times, and spring, September and fall meets fill the racing calendar, with the Kentucky Derby Museum at the gate operating year-round. Mint juleps, My Old Kentucky Home sung by six figures' worth of voices, and the most exciting two minutes in sports - the track five minutes south of downtown Louisville remains American racing's capital.
