Churchill's Hideaway

Before it was Churchill's Pub, Miami's punk headquarters traded under the name Churchill's Hideaway - and many of the city's musicians never stopped calling it that. The bar at 5501 NE Second Avenue in Little Haiti is the venue British expat Dave Daniels built after opening his first tiny pub on NW 54th Street on New Year's Day 1979; by late 1980 he had moved the operation to the Second Avenue building, a former old-timers' day bar dating to the 1940s, renamed it for Sir Winston Churchill, and hung satellite dishes to show English soccer and rugby to homesick expats. The Hideaway name captured what the place was - a British pub tucked improbably into the middle of what was becoming Little Haiti. The transformation into a music venue happened by accident of geography: when the punk club Flynn's closed in 1983, a few hundred fans of a couple dozen local bands needed a room, and Daniels - a former promoter who had booked Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton and Steppenwolf at English pop festivals - shrugged and let them in. After roots-rocker Charlie Pickett drew 300 people where the usual punk bills drew 40, Daniels built a proper stage, and the Hideaway became the incubator for four decades of Miami underground music - punk, hardcore, metal, noise, experimental jazz - with an anything-goes booking policy that earned it the nickname the CBGB of the South. Nearly 20,000 shows ran under Daniels before he sold in May 2014 to investor Mallory Kauderer and retired, having lived on the premises for half his life. The venue continued as Churchill's Pub, weathering gentrification pressure, a 2021 ownership dispute that briefly shuttered it, and the reopening rounds that followed - the cheap beer, notorious bathrooms and glorious noise surviving every era. This entry preserves the venue's historic Hideaway identity; the operating business today is Churchill's Pub at the same Little Haiti corner, still hosting local and touring bands in the room Daniels accidentally turned into an institution.
