City Winery - Atlanta

Wine country moved into a 1926 Sears warehouse when City Winery Atlanta opened at Ponce City Market in June 2016. The venue at 650 North Avenue NE occupies a corner of the vast brick Sears, Roebuck and Co. building in the Old Fourth Ward - the largest brick structure in the Southeast, reborn as a food hall, office and retail hub on the BeltLine's Eastside Trail - and brought founder Michael Dorf's urban winery concept to the South. Dorf, who launched New York's Knitting Factory in 1987 before creating the first City Winery in Manhattan in 2008, built the chain on a simple combination: a fully functioning winery, a chef-driven restaurant and an intimate seated concert room under one roof. The Atlanta room follows the format faithfully. A roughly 300-seat listening room hosts shows most nights of the week, with dinner and wine service running straight through the performances; the restaurant and barrel-lined private spaces carry the winemaking into view, with house wines fermented on site from grapes railed and trucked in from West Coast vineyards and served on tap. The opening season set the programming tone - Son Volt's Jay Farrar, The Weepies and Nellie McKay played the first week, with Ani DiFranco, Macy Gray, Aaron Neville, Leon Russell, Matthew Sweet and Rickie Lee Jones following - a calendar built on songwriters, soul, folk and jazz played to a quiet, seated house. The formula suits artists as much as audiences: multi-night residencies in a listening room where the crowd is dining rather than shouting, in a market slotted between the city's clubs and its theatres. Food and wine classes, tasting flights and private events fill the daytime hours, and the winery's barrel room doubles as one of Atlanta's more unusual event spaces. The Ponce City Market address places the venue at the centre of one of Atlanta's liveliest districts, with the BeltLine at the back door, the food hall a floor away and the roof-top amusement park overhead - a listening room embedded in the middle of the city's favourite adaptive-reuse landmark.
