A working winery inside a shopping mall sounds improbable, and that was rather the point. City Winery Philadelphia opened on 19 September 2019 at 990 Filbert Street, at 10th and Filbert inside Fashion District Philadelphia - the gleaming rebuild of the old Gallery mall on East Market Street - with Americana songwriter Justin Townes Earle playing the first concert on 30 September. The multi-storey venue made the chain an instant rarity in Philadelphia: a 350-seat, fully seated concert hall with dinner and wine service through the show, attached to a restaurant, wine bar and a licensed winery fermenting and pouring its own vintages in Center City. Founder Michael Dorf - who created the Knitting Factory in 1987 and the first City Winery in Manhattan in 2008 - timed the opening with a symmetry the company savoured: the original New York location closed the same week, forced out when Disney bought its Hudson Square block, and its tables and chairs were shipped down to furnish the Philadelphia room. The opening calendar announced the range of the booking policy at once, with Los Lobos and Musiq Soulchild among the first names on the marquee - roots rock, soul, R&B, folk, jazz and songwriter pop played to a listening crowd, with shows typically done by 10:30 pm. The chain's residency model travels well in a city between New York and Washington on every tour routing, and the Mediterranean-inspired menu came with local pedigree - opening chef Jason Heim is a Philadelphia native who ran the Nashville kitchen. Wine classes, tastings and private events fill the daytime schedule. The location banks on transit: Jefferson Station sits underneath the Fashion District, the Convention Center and Reading Terminal Market are a block away, and the venue anchors the entertainment end of a complex built to pull Center City foot traffic back to East Market - a listening room in the middle of the busiest transit crossroads in Pennsylvania.
