Club Congress

The hotel that caught John Dillinger runs one of the longest-serving music rooms in the American West. Club Congress at 311 East Congress Street operates inside Hotel Congress, the 1919 railroad hotel facing Tucson's historic Southern Pacific depot, a building already famous before a note was played: in January 1934 a basement fire forced the evacuation of the third floor, two firefighters recognised the guests who had tipped them heavily to carry down suspiciously heavy luggage, and within days Tucson police had captured the entire Dillinger gang without firing a shot at the most wanted men in America. The music began in 1985, the year Richard and Shana Oseran bought the faded hotel and opened Club Congress in its ground floor. The room grew into the launching pad of the Tucson scene and a fixture for touring underground and indie acts working the southwestern corridor, and it is regarded as the longest-running venue of its kind west of the Mississippi - a distinction Arizona's governor marked in 2005 by proclaiming Labor Day weekend Club Congress Weekend. Entertainment director David Slutes added HOCO Fest in 2004, a multi-day festival that takes over the whole property, and local artist Daniel Martin Diaz rebuilt the stage in 2005, winning Tucson Weekly's Best Functional Art Installation award. The club is one room of a compound: the Tap Room - ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons has called it his favourite bar, and bartender Tom "Tiger" Ziegler poured there from the late 1950s until his death in 2024 - the Cup Cafe, and the Century Room jazz club share the historic building, whose 1930s switchboard still works and whose neon sign is a downtown icon. Every January, Dillinger Days re-enacts the capture on the front steps while bands play inside - a fair summary of a venue where Tucson's history and its nightlife have never really been separate, and a cornerstone of the downtown revival the Oserans helped drive for four decades.
