Cobb's Comedy Club

Jim Carrey credits this club with jump-starting his career, and Robin Williams treated it as his home laboratory for three decades. Cobb's Comedy Club began in 1982 as Cobb's Pub, a 110-seat neighbourhood bar at 2069 Chestnut Street in San Francisco's Marina District that owner Ron Kakiki - with help from the comedy troupe Femprov, who designed the stage - converted into a full-time laugh room run with John Cantu. Tom Sawyer, a booker from opening day who later bought the club with his wife Carolyn, became the through-line of its history, moving the operation in 1987 to a 200-seat room in the Cannery at Fisherman's Wharf. The Cannery years built the legend: Williams dropped in nearly every year from 1983, often unannounced, working up routines that later filled Broadway; Carrey was brought back four weeks a year in the late eighties - much of his In Living Color arsenal was developed on its stage - and Paula Poundstone, Dana Carvey and the cream of the eighties boom all cycled through. A five-alarm fire at the Cannery in March 2002 closed the club for a month and triggered a legal fight that ended in eviction, but comedian friends helped the Sawyers raise the money to reopen that November at 915 Columbus Avenue in North Beach, a former disco once known as Dance Your Ass Off and later Wolfgang's. The current room seats 400 at tables with a full dinner menu and bar, making it one of the largest pure stand-up clubs in the country. Live Nation bought the club in 2005 with Sawyer staying on as booker, and the calendar mixes Netflix-special headliners - Dave Chappelle, Bill Burr, Dave Attell, Michelle Wolf - with the up-and-comers the club has always tested. Second in seniority only to the Punch Line among San Francisco comedy rooms, Cobb's anchors its stretch of Columbus Avenue amid North Beach's Italian restaurants - a survivor from the golden age of San Francisco stand-up still doing exactly what it did in 1982.
