Credit Union 1 Arena at UIC

Every UIC student's campus life is bookended inside this arena - convocation at the start, one of fourteen commencement ceremonies at the end. Credit Union 1 Arena at 525 South Racine Avenue on Chicago's Near West Side opened on 31 May 1982 as the UIC Pavilion, a 10-million-dollar multi-purpose arena by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill on the University of Illinois Chicago campus. Renovated in 2001 and again in 2005 with a new main lobby and concourse improvements, it seats 8,000 for basketball, 9,500 for boxing and wrestling and up to 10,300 for concerts on its flexible concrete floor. The building is first the home of the UIC Flames - men's and women's basketball and volleyball - and has hosted Horizon League tournaments and, in its early years, the university's Division I hockey program. Its tenant history maps Chicago sport's in-between spaces: the WNBA's Chicago Sky played here from 2006 to 2009, along with roller hockey's Cheetahs, indoor soccer's Storm and the Windy City Rollers roller derby league, while the concert and event calendar has carried everything from arena rock and hip-hop to boxing cards, wrestling tapings and political rallies across four decades. The naming era began in November 2018, when Illinois-based Credit Union 1 signed a 15-year, 9.3-million-dollar agreement - approved by trustees in January 2019 - that funds facility improvements, student-athlete support and 750,000 dollars in scholarships, the largest athletics partnership in UIC history. A block from the Racine Blue Line stop and minutes from the Loop off the Eisenhower Expressway, the arena remains what the Pavilion was built to be in 1982: the university's front room and the city's dependable mid-size bowl, where more than 6,000 degrees are conferred every spring under the same roof that hosts the season's biggest home games.
