Deep Ellum Art Co.

The slogan is printed on the wall - Dedicated to the Creative and Native - and the whole operation is built to prove it. Deep Ellum Art Co. at 3200 Commerce Street opened in the summer of 2017, founded by John and Kari LaRue in a late-1940s brick building that had served as an auto parts and service centre in the 1950s and later a printing press repair shop. LaRue, a restaurateur by trade, initially considered another restaurant for the site before deciding the neighbourhood - Dallas's historic music district, born from the blues and jazz corridors of the early twentieth century - needed a venue that preserved its artistic identity as redevelopment accelerated around it. The 5,000-square-foot interior combines three functions: a projection-mapped art gallery hung with local work for sale, a music venue with serious in-house production, and a nearly 60-foot bar pouring more than two dozen beers and ciders, draft cocktails and wines on tap. Room capacity runs to about 600 standing or 300 seated, and the production spec - 32-channel digital consoles, multitrack recording, multi-camera streaming, 360-degree projection mapping - outguns most rooms twice its size. Outside sprawls the Art Yard, roughly 15,000 square feet of treed open space billed as the biggest backyard in Deep Ellum: a street-art gallery of murals by dozens of artists, food trucks, yard games, picnic tables and a pavilion with its own 16-channel outdoor PA for second-stage sets and festivals. The calendar mirrors the mixed-use design: touring indie, folk, rock and hip-hop acts inside, monthly artist markets and gallery shows curated from the DFW creative community, art classes, and private events that scale from 20 to 2,000 people across the indoor-outdoor spread - open seven days a week. In a district where venue closures and rising rents make constant headlines, Art Co. functions as a working argument that Deep Ellum's original culture can hold its ground - an art gallery you can drink in, a music hall with murals, and a backyard that doubles as a festival ground.
