Denver Botanic Gardens York Street

Beneath the flower beds lies a Victorian cemetery, above them rises a concrete-latticed jungle dome, and every summer a sunken lawn between the two becomes one of America's loveliest concert venues. Denver Botanic Gardens at 1007 York Street occupies 24 acres in the Cheesman Park neighbourhood, on ground that served as the Catholic section of the city cemetery established by Denver founder William Larimer in 1859. The Gardens organisation incorporated on 3 February 1951 as a consolidation of the city's horticultural groups, first planted in City Park, and moved to the fenced York Street site in 1959 after vandalism drove it out - the same year the adjacent Waring mansion was donated as its headquarters. The grounds hold more than 40 distinct gardens threaded by straight formal paths and winding side trails: the Japanese Garden designed by Koichi Kawana, a South African garden, rose and lilac collections, and pioneering plantings of Rocky Mountain natives - the institution was among the first anywhere to practise water-wise conservation gardening and biological pest management, and it maintains one of the largest collections of plants from cold temperate climates in the world. The architectural signature is the Boettcher Memorial Tropical Conservatory, opened in 1966 by Denver architects Victor Hornbein and Ed White Jr. - an arcing interlaced-concrete and plexiglass dome sheltering tropical and subtropical species, declared a Denver landmark in 1973 along with the Waring House. Since 1980 the grassy sunken amphitheatre has hosted a summer concert series that sells out on reputation alone - picnic-blanket evenings with major jazz, folk and world-music names - while the Blossoms of Light holiday display has drawn winter crowds since 1989 with hundreds of thousands of lights, welcoming over 145,000 visitors in a season. With satellite sites at Chatfield Farms and the Mount Goliath alpine trail high on the Mount Evans road, the Gardens rank among the most-visited botanic institutions in the United States - a city block of engineered wilderness ten minutes from downtown Denver.
