Dominico Field at Christie Pits Park

Amateur baseball's most storied Canadian diamond sits in a bowl dug by Victorian sand-shovels. Dominico Field is the full-sized, fenced ballpark at the heart of Christie Pits Park, the 22-acre former quarry at the corner of Bloor and Christie streets in Toronto's west end, its distinctive sunken geometry the legacy of the Christie Sand Pits that gave the park its enduring nickname long after it was formally dubbed Willowvale Park. The park carries heavy history. On 16 August 1933, months after Hitler took power, a swastika banner unfurled by a local gang after a playoff softball game between the largely Jewish Harbord Playground team and St. Peter's ignited the Christie Pits riot - six hours of street fighting drawing upwards of ten thousand people, the most infamous outbreak of ethnic violence in the city's history and a landmark event in Canadian civil-rights memory. The field's happier fame belongs to the Toronto Maple Leafs of the Intercounty Baseball League - the amateur club founded in 1969 and run for decades by Jack and Lynne Dominico, for whom the diamond was named in 2010. Summer evenings at the Pits are a Toronto institution: free baseball watched from the grassy bowl slopes, spectators sprawled on blankets above the outfield fence in one of the most distinctive viewing set-ups in the sport. Around the diamond the park runs the full community program - two more ball diamonds, basketball courts, a soccer and rugby field, the Alex Duff Memorial outdoor pool, a splash pad and a winter ice rink - with Christie subway station directly across the street. Films, festivals and open-air movie nights use the bowl's natural amphitheatre, but the field remains the headline act: a neighbourhood quarry turned civic stage, where the city's oldest baseball rivalries and its hardest historical lessons share the same grass.
