Horned Frog basketball finally got a home worthy of the Big 12 on 20 December 2015, when TCU beat Abilene Christian in a rebuilt arena that had been gutted to its circular shell. The Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena at 2900 Stadium Drive in Fort Worth began life as Daniel-Meyer Coliseum, opened on 14 December 1961 after a 1.45-million-dollar build by local architect Joseph Pelich, who modelled the fully circular hall on arenas at Wichita State and Maryland and gave TCU fans 27 rows of seats around the floor. The coliseum was named for TCU letterman and trustee Milton Daniel and the legendary coach Leo "Dutch" Meyer, who was athletics director when it opened. For half a century it hosted Southwest Conference basketball, graduations, concerts and everything in between, picking up piecemeal upgrades - new locker rooms in 2002, a players' lounge in 2003 - while falling steadily behind the facilities arms race. The answer was radical: in March 2014 the building was closed and demolished back to its shell, and a 20-month, 72-million-dollar rebuild by HKS and Austin Commercial produced what is effectively a new arena inside the old ring. Ed Schollmaier, the former Alcon Laboratories chief executive and 25-year TCU trustee, and his wife Rae provided the 10-million-dollar lead gift, and the renamed arena was dedicated in December 2015, shortly after Rae's passing. The result seats 6,800 around the Walsh Family Court, with the playing surface lowered eight feet for courtside seating, wider concourses, a courtside club, the Jane and John Justin Hall of Fame at the entrance and a new sports medicine centre. The complex also houses athletics offices for golf, tennis, track and other programs, and the grounds - shared with Amon G. Carter Stadium next door - retain the Daniel-Meyer Athletic Complex name. Men's and women's basketball and volleyball all pack the room now: the men drew a record 8,412 against Texas in 2022, the women 7,494 for a 2025 NCAA tournament date against Louisville. For visitors it is an easy stop on the compact TCU campus, a few minutes from the Fort Worth Zoo and University Drive's restaurant strip, with game-day parking spread across the surrounding athletics lots.
