El Club - Detroit

The New York Times called it "a promising new spot in Mexicantown" within months of opening, and Rolling Stone later ranked it among the ten best live music venues in America - not bad for a converted community hall on Vernor Highway. El Club at 4114 West Vernor Highway in Southwest Detroit opened in May 2016 inside the former Mexicantown Fiesta Center, a 4,800-square-foot space near Clark Park that owner Graeme Flegenheimer rebuilt with a proper stage, serious sound and an all-ages door policy. That last detail was the founding idea. Much of Detroit's underground scene ran through 18-plus bars, so Flegenheimer - who also owned the Church on York arts space in Los Angeles - pitched El Club as "all ages, all the time," opening the city's best touring bookings to teenagers. The room holds around 400 standing, with a 1,000-square-foot patio adding 300 more in warm months, and it filled a genuine gap between Detroit's dive stages and its theatres. The booking established itself fast: Chelsea Wolfe, Wax Idols and the noise-heavy Trip Metal Festival in the first season, and a steady flow of indie, punk, hip-hop and electronic tours since. Local press has handed it Best Rock Club honours for multiple years running, and the venue has become the default Detroit stop for acts a tour cycle away from the Majestic or Saint Andrew's Hall. Food was part of the plan from day one. A hybrid wood-and-gas-fired oven turns out pizzas somewhere between Neapolitan and New York style - the kitchen was launched by Detroit pop-up veteran Matt Ziolkowski - and the bar leans Latin, with mezcal, an avocado margarita and a michelada made with the house pizza sauce. The neighbourhood context matters: this stretch of Vernor is the heart of Mexican Detroit, with taquerias and panaderias in every direction. Practicalities: the venue sits just off I-75 at the Vernor exit, ten minutes from downtown, with street parking on the surrounding blocks. Shows are general admission, the patio hosts summer parties and DJ nights, and the room's low stage and tight floor keep even sold-out nights intimate.
