Emerald Theatre - Houston

Behind an unassuming door on Travis Street, five professional actors gather nightly in a hidden library lined with ten thousand books - and one of them has just downed five shots of whiskey. The Emerald Theatre at 412 Travis Street in downtown Houston is the home of Drunk Shakespeare, the immersive comedy franchise in which a rotating "Drunk Shakespeare Society" attempts the Bard with one deliberately impaired member, and the venue was purpose-built for exactly that kind of intimate, interactive chaos. The space opened in 2022 under Brass Jar Productions, the New York company behind the show's national expansion, taking a mixed-beverage permit and late-hours certificate for the Travis Street address in April of that year. The design is pure speakeasy: a small, warmly lit library set, a full cocktail bar with in-seat service throughout the performance, and roughly 130 seats arranged so no one is more than a few rows from the action. Programming has broadened around the flagship. Seasonal and spin-off productions - Drunk Romeo and Juliet, Drunk Dracula, Drunk Pirates - rotate through the calendar alongside stand-up comedy, small concerts and private events, all trading on the same close-quarters format. There is no food or drink minimum, and the bar pours beer, wine, craft cocktails and light snacks. The location earns the night out. The theatre sits in the historic Market Square district at the north end of downtown, surrounded by some of Houston's oldest commercial buildings, with Market Square Park, the Lyric Market food hall and a dense cluster of bars and restaurants within two blocks. The Theater District proper - Alley Theatre, Jones Hall, Wortham Center - is a five-minute walk, making the Emerald the irreverent little sibling of the city's performing-arts core. Practical notes: performances are generally 21 and over given the format, though policies vary by show; tickets sell through the production companies rather than a house box office; and parking is the usual downtown mix of garages and evening street meters, with the 402 Travis lot directly across the street. Typical visits run two to three hours.
