Empower Field at Mile High

Ed Sheeran put 85,233 people in the building on 19 August 2023 - the biggest single night in the stadium's history and a Colorado concert record. Empower Field at Mile High opened on 11 August 2001 at 1701 Bryant Street in Denver, replacing the beloved original Mile High Stadium that stood barely fifty feet away, and inheriting its defining statistic: the playing field sits at exactly 5,280 feet above sea level. The 400-million-dollar build by HNTB and Fentress Architects gave the Denver Broncos a 76,125-seat horseshoe with 132 luxury suites and an undulating steel-and-glass profile that echoes the Rockies to the west. Designers preserved the old stadium's famous "Mile High Thunder" by putting steel beneath the seating decks, so tens of thousands of stomping feet still rumble like the 1970s. Bucky, the rearing white bronco from the old south stands, was moved to the crown of the new scoreboard. Naming rights have been a saga: Invesco Field at Mile High from 2001, Sports Authority Field from 2011, a season as plain Broncos Stadium after that retailer's bankruptcy, and Empower Field at Mile High since 2019. Through every rebrand locals just call it Mile High. A 100-million-dollar upgrade ahead of the 2023 season modernised video boards and premium areas. The building's resume stretches well past football: Barack Obama accepted the Democratic presidential nomination before 84,000 here in 2008, the Colorado Rapids and lacrosse's Outlaws were long-time tenants, and the concert history runs from the Rolling Stones and U2 to Taylor Swift, The Weeknd and Illenium's record-setting EDM trilogy. Metallica's two-night 2025 stand drew a combined 152,000, the venue's multi-night record. Match-day logistics are drilled smooth: the stadium has its own light-rail station on the RTD system two stops from downtown Union Station, 17 parking lots ring the bowl, and the walk across the South Platte from Lower Downtown takes twenty minutes. The thin air is real - visiting teams use oxygen on the sidelines, and visiting fans feel the stairs.
