Two Olympic Games have already played out on this ground, and a third arrives in 2028. Exposition Park, the 160-acre state-owned campus at 700 Exposition Park Drive in South Los Angeles, began life in 1872 as an agricultural fairground and was reborn between 1910 and 1913 as a City Beautiful ensemble of museum, armory and sunken rose garden - the cultural heart that grew into LA's densest concentration of museums and stadiums. The park's centrepiece is the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, opened in 1923, torch-crowned host of the 1932 and 1984 Olympics and home of USC Trojans football. Beside it sit BMO Stadium, the 22,000-seat soccer cathedral built for LAFC in 2018 on the old Sports Arena site, and a museum row that includes the Natural History Museum, the California Science Center with the Space Shuttle Endeavour, the California African American Museum and the under-construction Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. The seven-acre Rose Garden, with hundreds of varieties in bloom from spring through fall, remains the park's quiet centre; around it the campus works as Los Angeles's public backyard - soccer fields, playgrounds, picnic lawns and the swim stadium built for the 1932 Games serving the neighbourhoods around it every day. As an event site the park operates at every scale: Coliseum football Saturdays and international soccer friendlies, BMO's LAFC and Angel City matches, stadium concerts, food and music festivals on the lawns, and museum block parties. The 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games will make the Coliseum the first stadium to host three Olympic opening or athletics programs, with the park as a competition hub. Getting there is straightforward by LA standards: the Metro E Line's Expo Park/USC station stops at the front door, and event-day parking fills the structures early. The park's frontage on Figueroa faces USC's campus, and the combination of museums, gardens and stadium tours makes it one of the few LA destinations that genuinely fills a full day without a car.
