It stands a block from Beale Street on ground where W. C. Handy heard the blues take shape, and its arena bowl honours that inheritance with a music-note motif worked through the building. FedExForum, at 191 Beale Street in downtown Memphis, opened in September 2004 as the most expensive arena of its era in the region - a 250-million-dollar, publicly financed home built to secure the Grizzlies' move from Vancouver. The arena seats about 17,800 for basketball and up to 19,000 for concerts, with 80-plus suites and club levels wrapped in exposed brick and steel that nod to the South Main warehouse district around it. Since opening night - a Grizzlies game preceded by a Beale Street second-line - it has been the biggest indoor room in the Mid-South, hosting the University of Memphis Tigers men's basketball program alongside the NBA tenant. Its event resume runs deep: NCAA Tournament rounds including 2008 and 2014 regionals, C-USA and American Athletic Conference tournaments, WWE pay-per-views, Disney productions and virtually every arena-scale tour that routes the lower Mississippi - Elton John, Paul McCartney, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake's homecoming shows, George Strait and the annual Southern Heritage Classic weekend concerts among them. The building carries civic weight beyond the calendar. Grizzlies playoff runs - the Grit and Grind era of Marc Gasol, Mike Conley, Tony Allen and Zach Randolph, and the Ja Morant years since - turned the bowl into the city's loudest shared room, and the franchise's lease ties the NBA to Memphis into the 2030s, with a major renovation program agreed in the mid-2020s to modernise the arena. Visiting is a straight downtown play: walk from Beale Street's clubs and barbecue, park in the Fourth and Union garages or ride the Main Street trolley, and build in time for the Rock 'n' Soul Museum, which sits at the arena's plaza corner. Few American arenas put a headline act this close to the music history that made the city.
